 I saw your website last year but was just browsing again, today. Some of your stories sound a lot like my childhood. Enjoyed the cars, the dogs, and reread the stories, "Collards" and "Peach Cobbler".  I still think Skeeter looks a lot like Jake. By the way, I also love dogs. I must. The hubby and I have five of them. When Frenchy brought Skeeter home I really wasn't looking for a fifth dog. I thought I had my hands full with four: Rocky, Babe, Daisy, and Tidbit. Rocky is a Cocker I adopted from the local shelter. Babe is a Schnauzer who also came from the shelter. They live out back of the house in a kennel. Daisy is a Dachund that Frenchy found at the local grocery store. It was a cold, rainy October day and she kept trying to get inside with each and every customer. When the manager had enough he told one of the clerks to call the shelter. Frenchy said, "you mean that cute little Dachund?" The manager replied that she might be cute, but he didn't want her in the grocery store. Frenchy told him not to bother with the shelter, he was taking her home. Tidbit is a Cairn-Jack Russell Terrier mix and the only one I've bought outright. Incidentally, the Continental Kennel Club is realizing this mix as a new breed. And, of course, we come to the last of our canine friends to Skeeter. Frenchy originally picked her up because he wanted a dog on the truck. He had stopped at a mechanic shop in Georgia and Skeeter wouldn't leave him alone. Wherever he went she did too. You might say that Skeeter adopted him. After riding on the truck a few weeks and getting bigger, and bigger, and bigger, Skeeter gave Frenchy a scare when she ran onto an Interstate. The only thing that sved her was a truck that let off some steam and she jumped for the side of the road. Later that week, at the truck terminal she played "catch me if you can" with Frenchy when he really didn't have time to play. And, once again she scared him. He told me when he got home that Skeeter wasn't going with him on the truck any more and he was leaving her at home. Skeeter and Tidbit had bonded pretty well by this time so I told Frenchy to take Daisy with him. This worked for a few weeks, that is, until she decided to jump out of the truck and ran into the path of a fast-oncoming forklift. That was the end of her truck adventures. So, now, I have Rocky and Babe in the kennel outside and Daisy, Tidbit and Skeeter inside. I say they're inside. They are usually let out to run in the back during the day and I bring them in at night. It is pure chaos when I let Rocky and Babe out of the kennel to run the whole yard as well. (We live on an acre and three-tenths so they have plenty of space to run.
